ZIMBABWE — HARARE- Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and opposition leaders failed on Saturday to resolve outstanding issues that have stalled the implementation of a power sharing deal aimed at ending the country’s economic and political crisis.
Mugabe met main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader, Morgan Tsvangirai and faction leader of a splinter MDC, Arthur Mutambara at the Zimbabwe State House.
The meeting, which began early morning, ended just before 1600 hours.
“There was deliberation but there was no agreement.
Further consultations will take place with a view to try resolve the issues,” the spokesperson of the main MDC, Nelson Chamisa told reporters:
Chamisa said Thabo Mbeki, the former South African president, the mediator of the Zimbabwe talks can be the ‘key in unlocking’ a deadlock that has stalled the formation of a unity government.
"We are still stuck at the same point as Mugabe insists on taking all the key ministries.
As the MDC, we feel the urgent intervention of Mbeki can be the key in unlocking the stalemate as Zimbabweans cannot wait any longer before a new government is formed," said Chamisa.
The implementation of the power sharing agreement signed on September 15 has been stalled by disagreements over the allocation of cabinet portfolios.
Prospects of a new cabinet and government are receding as Mugabe wants to get all key ministries after securing the positions of head of state and government in the deal.
The MDC this week called for Mbeki to mediate in power-sharing talks but Mugabe's ZANU-PF party insists that no outside mediation is needed.
